Can a Sinus Infection Make a Person Dizzy Or Feel Fuzzy? A Nurse's Guide

If you have a full blown chronic or acute sinus infection you probably are experiencing many sinus infection symptoms. Some of the symptoms that people report are a feeling of dizziness, dizzy spells, lightheadedness or they feel fuzzy headed.

Generally with a sinus infection you won't have true dizziness. Dizziness is called vertigo and takes place in the inner ear. If sinus drainage reaches your ear it would be in the middle ear not the inner ear where your balance could be affected. The inner ear is completely sealed off. Two or three conditions can be responsible for dizziness caused by the inner ear.

Benign positional vertigo is vertigo that occurs when you change the position of your head too fast. It is harmless but some people are plagued with it often. Labyrinthitis usually follows a cold or the flu and is caused by a viral infection in the inner ear. Meniere's disease is another inner ear problem. It causes vertigo, loss of balance, and ringing in the ears and can deeply affect people's lives.

With true vertigo, which is a feeling that you or the room is spinning or moving, you may be light-headed, or feel faint, be unsteady or have a loss of balance. This usually does not happen with a sinus infection. Most causes of dizziness are not serious and either gets better on their own or is easily treated.

Often people who have a sinus infection report they feel dizzy when actually they feel fuzzyheaded or a little light headed. This could be due to pressure in the eustachian tubes or from other causes such as getting up too fast from a sitting or lying position causing a change in the blood pressure, called orthostatic hypotension.

Or one could be dehydrated, especially if you have an elevated temperature (fever). Another cause of dizziness may be from any medications you're taking. So make sure to check and see if dizziness is a side effect of your medications or any sinus medications, which I don't recommend.

Of course with congestion in the head or nasal passages one can feel pretty miserable and not be drinking enough water and not getting enough sinus drainage. Breaking up the dried up mucous in your sinus cavities may help get the sinus drainage going and get relief from the congested feeling which may be causing the lightheaded or fuzzy headed feeling.

With proper natural treatment one can quickly turn their sinus infection symptoms around and get better fast. It's normal to think your dizziness is something serious but it's not likely you're truly dizzy especially from a sinus problem. If you have any of the other conditions you probably would have had some warning before the infection. Most likely you just have some temporary sinus symptoms that will soon go away, especially as you get better from the sinus infection.

One of the most common types of headaches is the migraine. When we think of migraines we often think of those types of headaches that completely debilitate you-but this is not always the case-some migraines are rather mild. The main symptoms of migraines are pain in the cheeks and sensitivity to light and sound, accompanied by nausea. They can last anywhere from a few hours to a few days.

The Cluster Headache

The cluster headache is one of the least common types of frequent headache. It is usually characterized by clusters of headaches within a period of 1 to 3 weeks with breaks of up to a year in between episodes. The headaches are short ranging from just a few minutes to a couple of hours, very painful and can occur up to eight times in a day. This type of frequent headache can also be accompanied by a stuffy nose, watery eyes, and swelling in the area where the pain is centered. These types of headaches are most commonly experienced by men and only affect about 69 out of 100,000 people.

The Tension Headache

Another more common type of frequent headache is the tension headache. These cause a feeling of tension along both sides of the head and sometimes down the neck as well. They can be mild to severe and can last anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours. People who suffer from these types of headaches often get them several times a month.

The Sinus Headache

Sinus headaches are one of the most misdiagnosed of the frequent headaches. Misdiagnosed by the patient, that is. In order for it to be a true sinus headache there are several factors that must be present. The pain is usually not just in the cheek area, but also in the forehead and behind the eyes. This frequent headache is usually worse in the morning and can be mild to severe. Often these patients also complain of a stuffy nose and green or yellow discharge out of their nose. If it is an infection, they may also have swollen lymph nodes and a fever. Often people who have a migraine will misdiagnose it as a sinus headache because some of the symptoms and causes are similar.

What Should You Do?

A frequent headache problem can really hamper your ability to work and also to enjoy life. It can even lead to depression and other emotional disorders if the patient is not able to find relief. If you are experiencing this type of frustration from headaches, you should make an appointment to visit your doctor. In preparation, make a headache journal detailing when you get headaches, their severity, their duration and details about what you ate, your activities, etc. This will better help the doctor to diagnose a cause.

In the meantime, make sure that you get plenty of rest, a good diet, exercise at least a few days a week, and drink lots of water. These can go a long way to your recovery.
